Health and the Modern Home (Hardcover): Mark Jackson Health and the Modern Home (Hardcover)
Mark Jackson
R4,461 Discovery Miles 44 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Health and the Modern Home explores shifting and contentious debates about the impact of the domestic environment on health in the modern period. Drawing on recent scholarship, contributors expose the socio-political context in which the physical and emotional environment of "the modern home" and "family" became implicated in the maintenance of health and in the aetiology and pathogenesis of diverse psychological and physical conditions. In addition, they critically analyze the manner in which the expression and articulation of medical concerns about the domestic environment served to legitimate particular political and ideological positions.

In 6 laminated pages our experienced chemistry author and professor gathered key elements organized and designed to use along with your text and lectures, as a review before testing, or as a memory companion that keeps key answers always at your fingertips. As many students have said "a must have" study tool. Suggested uses: Quick Reference -- instead of digging into the textbook to find a core answer you need while studying, use the guide to reinforce quickly and repeatedly; Memory -- refreshing your memory repeatedly is a foundation of studying, have the core answers handy so you can focus on understanding the concepts; Test Prep -- no student should be cramming, but if you are, there is no better tool for that final review.

Coloniality, Ontology, and the Question of the Posthuman (Paperback): Mark Jackson Coloniality, Ontology, and the Question of the Posthuman (Paperback)
Mark Jackson
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book brings together emerging insights from across the humanities and social sciences to highlight how postcolonial studies are being transformed by increasingly influential and radical approaches to nature, matter, subjectivity, human agency, and politics. These include decolonial studies, political ontology, political ecology, indigeneity, and posthumanisms. The book examines how postcolonial perspectives demand of posthumanisms and their often ontological discourses that they reflexively situate their own challenges within the many long histories of decolonised practice. Just as postcolonial research needs to critically engage with radical transitions suggested by the ontological turn and its related posthumanist developments, so too do posthumanisms need to decolonise their conceptual and analytic lenses. The chapters' interdisciplinary analyses are developed through global, critical, and empirical cases that include: city spaces and urbanisms in the Global North and South; food politics and colonial land use; cultural and cosmic representation in film, theatre, and poetry; nation building; the Anthropocene; materiality; the void; pluriversality; and, indigenous world views. Theoretically and conceptually rich, the book proposes new trajectories through which postcolonial and posthuman scholarships can learn from one another and so critically advance.

Sigils are symbols designed for a specific magical purpose. They are symbolic icons that are condensed representations of more complex ideas or information. It was from astrology that the word sigil became acknowledged as an occult device with great power. Traditionally, a sigil is a line diagram symbolizing the unpronounceable name of a spirit, a form of pictorial signature of a spirit. To know the name of a spirit gives the magician the ability to command the spirit. They are a part of the ritual of ceremonial magic used for the conjuration of angels, demons and other spirits. In more modern times, the sigil has been reinvented as a Monogram of Thought, a graphic symbol created with the sole purpose of fulfilling the magicians desired outcome, a personal desire or set of desires. The term sigil is derived from the Latin words sigilla, sigillum and signum and in terms of magic it is generally understood to mean sign, seal, signa - ture or little picture. Sigils are also called by differ ent names like seal and pentacle. A seal is a sigil placed in a circle, it gives the conjuror the ability to capture the spirit and command it. A pentacle is a type of talisman used in magic evocation for protection. All religious symbols count as sigils and they date back to prehistory when humans first used images to infer intent - magic will - making it possible for the creator of the sigil to receive something or make something change in the universe, themselves, in other people or to summon and control outside entities. They were part of our ancestor's pictorial language in an age of symbolic literacy. In the ancient and classic worlds of the pre-Christian era, the term magic referred to arcane or esoteric knowledge. If someone had the knowledge to ward off illness or misfortune or gain favour with the gods by whatever means, they were considered to be a form of magician. The ability to produce magic sigils to ward off evil, counteract the devil and offer protection from sorcerers and witches continued unabated into the early Judeo-Christian tradition. The Cross being the upmost symbol of protection. One difference between the priest and the sorcerer was that one employed magic for religious purposes whilst the other used it for their own ends. The concept of the sigil became established during the Late Medieval and Renaissance period 1350-1700. During this time, magicians used sigils to call upon angels, demons and other spirits. Each spirit had its own sigil representing its 'essence', a sort of signature or spiritual autograph. These are the high magic sigils associated with black magic. Magicians created and studied these symbols, publishing lists of them in magical training books called grimoires. By the beginning of the 20th century, science and rationale had played a monumental role in the re-realizing of magic practise. Self-professed adepts such as Aleistair Crowley and Austin Osman Spare, rejected the traditions of Renaissance magic, taking the sigil out of ritual and employing them in their personal quests of mystical exploration, as symbols of intent

The occult art of magical writing begins in pre-history with the creation of the two elemental signs called the dot or egg and the line, serpent or sperm. These two signs are the mother and father of all other signs, symbols and letters that have come into being. The meaning and form of the two signs have been symbolically refined over the millennia by magicians. In the form of magic letters they are signatures, literal and abstract, of the Universal forces of Creation, from whence all knowledge originates. Concisely written and richly illustrated this is the most accessible and informative book on the occult history and graphic origins of the signs, symbols, scripts and ciphers of Western Occultism.

Claire Nesbitt, Mark Jackson
R4,433 Discovery Miles 44 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From the reception of imperial ekphraseis in Hagia Sophia to the sounds and smells of the back streets of Constantinople, the sensory perception of Byzantium is an area that lends itself perfectly to an investigation into the experience of the Byzantine world. The theme of experience embraces all aspects of Byzantine studies and the Experiencing Byzantium symposium brought together archaeologists, architects, art historians, historians, musicians and theologians in a common quest to step across the line that divides how we understand and experience the Byzantine world and how the Byzantines themselves perceived the sensual aspects of their empire and also their faith, spirituality, identity and the nature of 'being' in Byzantium. The papers in this volume derive from the 44th Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies, held for the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies by the University of Newcastle and University of Durham, at Newcastle upon Tyne in April 2011. They are written by a group of international scholars who have crossed disciplinary boundaries to approach an understanding of experience in the Byzantine world. Experiencing Byzantium is volume 18 in the series published by Ashgate on behalf of the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies.

Pagan Sigils - Illustrated Guide to The Non Christian Symbols of Western Occultism (Paperback): Mark Jackson Pagan Sigils - Illustrated Guide to The Non Christian Symbols of Western Occultism (Paperback)

R404 R329 Discovery Miles 3 290 Save R75 (19%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

With their origins in prehistory, pagan sigils were part of our ancestor's pictorial language, created in a golden age of symbol literacy. Following a millennia of religious repression and demonization by the Christian church, they were rediscovered and revived in the 18th and 19th centuries. Since that time pagan sigils have functioned as a spiritual and graphic resource for the modern, Earth centered, religious movement of Neopaganism. In the late 20th century, they were assimilated by the Counter Culture and New Age movements as symbols of ageless wisdom. Pagan sigils continue to inspire the Earth centered movements of Eco paganism.

Infanticide - Historical Perspectives on Child Murder and Concealment, 1550-2000 (Hardcover, New Ed): Mark Jackson Infanticide - Historical Perspectives on Child Murder and Concealment, 1550-2000 (Hardcover, New Ed)
Mark Jackson
R3,984 Discovery Miles 39 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The history of infanticide from the 16th through to the late 20th century is the subject of this volume. Collectively, the contributions explore how the concealment of pregnancy, birth and death, particularly by unmarried women, became a central preoccupation of witnesses, doctors, courts and legislatures concerned with suspicious infant deaths. While the emphasis is upon Britain, original and stimulating accounts of infanticide accusations and trials in France, Germany, and South Africa provide compelling comparative analyses. Presenting a series of case studies, successive chapters expose striking continuities, across both time and space, in the social history of infanticide. Clearly written, focusing on a range of original cases and documents, and addressing critical historiographical questions, Infanticide will be invaluable to historians and students researching the social history of medicine, law, crime, and gender. In addition, it will appeal to lawyers, doctors, and others interested in understanding the historical roots of modern debates about infanticide.

Leon Benade, Mark Jackson
R3,466 Discovery Miles 34 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an edited collection grouped into three key thematic areas. Its authors are researchers and theoretical scholars in the fields of education curriculum, education technology, education philosophy, and design for education. They present primary research and theoretical considerations, descriptive accounts and philosophical reflections to provide readers with a broad sweep of the 'state of play' in thinking about the place and space of learning. Transforming Education distils, from a panoply of critical arenas, an understanding of the forces currently at play in redefining curriculum agendas for education - from primary to post-secondary. It analyses the major ways in which the built environment of education is transforming, in response to various globalised policy drivers and new education delivery technologies. Its authors critique the ways education performs a governance function over the users and occupants of space, be it physical or virtual. For readers who may be seriously engaging with the concept of spatiality in relation to education for the first time, this book provides the opportunity to develop a clear understanding of a wide scope of theory, practice and critique in relation to learning environments.

Design, Education and Pedagogy (Hardcover): Leon Benade, Mark Jackson Design, Education and Pedagogy (Hardcover)
Leon Benade, Mark Jackson
R4,126 Discovery Miles 41 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the increasing emergence within educational institutions, such as schools and universities, of large, flexible spaces whose design is underpinned by cutting-edge principles and technologies. These changes in educational facilities have spawned a range of new terminology. For example, terms such as 'modern learning environments', 'innovative learning environments', 'flexible learning environments' and 'new generation learning spaces' have gained currency in recent years. The development of flexible learning spaces, while suggesting design creativity, also points to the desire by governments to influence educational outcomes. The displacement of traditional classrooms also presupposes varied teaching and learning approaches, calling on teachers to work in teams and to de-privatise their practice into spaces that are transparent and porous. These developments in the area of educational facilities suggest critical questions regarding the origins and purposes of these changes in educational thinking and practice. Questions must also be raised about the links between conception, design intention and spatial practice. Underlying these questions are competing views on the design of education facilities. This volume gathers a range of international authors who theorise these questions at the intersection of building design, pedagogy and educational policy. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal Educational Philosophy and Theory.

International Relations in Psychiatry: Britain, Germany, and the United States to World War II addresses a crucial period in the history of psychiatry by examining the transfer of conceptual, institutional, and financial resources and the migration of psychiatrists between Britain, the United States, and Germany. The decades around 1900 were crucial in the evolution of modern medical and social sciences, and in the formation of various national health services systems. The modern fields of psychiatry and mental health care are located at the intersection of these spheres. There emerged concepts, practices, and institutions that marked responses to challenges posed by urbanization, industrialization, and the formation of the nation-state. These psychiatric responseswere locally distinctive, and yet at the same time established influential models with an international impact. In spite of rising nationalism in Europe, the intellectual, institutional and material resources that emerged in thevarious local and national contexts were rapidly observed to have had an impact beyond any national boundaries. In numerous ways, innovations were adopted and refashioned for the needs and purposes of new national and local systems. International Relations in Psychiatry: Britain, Germany, and the United States to World War II brings together hitherto separate approaches from the social, political, and cultural history of medicine and health care and argues that modern psychiatry developed in a constant, though not always continuous, transfer of ideas, perceptions, and experts across national borders. Contributors: John C. Burnham, Eric J. Engstrom, Rhodri Hayward, Mark Jackson, Pamela Michael, Hans Pols, Volker Roelcke, Heinz-Peter Schmiedebach, Mathew Thomson, Paul J. Weindling, Louise Westwood Volker Roelcke is Professor and Director at the Institute for the History of Medicine, Giessen University, Germany. Paul J. Pershing's Lieutenants - American Military Leadership in World War I (Hardcover): David T. Zabecki, Douglas V. Mastriano Pershing's Lieutenants - American Military Leadership in World War I (Hardcover)
David T. Zabecki, Douglas V. Mastriano; Contributions by William H. Van Husen, Holt D. Theis, Jerry D. Morelock, …
R659 Discovery Miles 6 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

World War I had a profound impact on the United States of America, which was forced to 'grow' an army almost overnight. The day the United States declared war on Germany, the US Army was only the 17th largest in the world, ranking behind Portugal - the Regular Army had only 128,00 troops, backed up by the National Guard with some 182,000 troops. By the end of the war it had grown to 3,700,000, with slightly more than half that number in Europe. Until the United States did so, no country in all history had tried to deploy a 2-million-man force 3,000 miles from its own borders, a force led by American Expeditionary Forces Commander-in-Chief General John J. Pershing. This was America's first truly modern war and rising from its ranks was a new generation of leaders who would control the fate of the United States armed forces during the interwar period and into World War II. This book reveals the history of the key leaders working for and with John J. Pershing during this tumultuous period, including George S. Patton (tank commander and future commander of the US Third Army during World War II); Douglas MacArthur (42nd Division commander and future General of the Army) and Harry S. Truman (artillery battery commander and future President of the United States). Edited by Major General David T. Zabecki (US Army, Retired) and Colonel Douglas V. Mastriano (US Army, Retired), this fascinating title comprises chapters on individual leaders from subject experts across the US, including faculty members of the US Army War College.
